They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I hope these photos give you a small glimpse of the magic that happened in kindergarten this week...

We did all of that in 4 days! It was a truly beautiful week.

Classroom Reminders:

We are still looking for 4 or 5 afternoon volunteers for Sports Day. Please see last week's post for details.

We dove into our ocean inquiry this week with a look at one of the most fascinating creatures in the sea...the octopus! We watched a variety of octopus video clips, read many stories and learned a TON of interesting facts. Your child is now pretty much an octopus expert. See how many of these octopus trivia questions they are able to answer... (check your answers down below)

1. How many hearts does an octopus have?
2. What color is their blood?
3. If an octopus loses one of its tentacles, what will happen?
4. Octopuses can squeeze into incredibly tiny spaces because_____.
5. How many brains does an octopus have?
6. What do octopuses like to eat?
7. What is the world's most poisonous octopus?
8. What does an octopus use its suction cups for?
9. Where do octopuses lay their eggs?
10. Out of approximately 60,000 eggs, how many will grow to become a full sized octopus? Why?

Students recorded some of their new learning through their all-star writing skills and drew some beautifully detailed artwork to accompany it. We've also been painting octopuses at center time. How cute are these?!?

We've been practicing making and breaking numbers to match our calendar number each day. Although creating number sentences is NOT an expectation in kindergarten, many of our students are enjoying this challenge (and totally ROCKING it)!

Classroom Reminders:

1.  Sports Day is coming! This will be taking place on the early dismissal morning of Friday, June 8. We will require 4 or 5 afternoon parents to join us for the festivities and help our kinders make it through all of the stations. If you are interested in being one of our volunteers AND have your approved security clearance, please email me (taroberts@cbe.ab.ca) to let me know. Morning students are more than welcome to join us for this exciting morning, but will require adult supervision. I will send out further details as I learn more. Stay tuned for additional volunteer opportunities for this event coming your way soon.

We had a REAL scientist visit our class this week! Students were overjoyed to participate in an experiment with Scientist May. We worked through the scientific method to answer the question, How do different drinks affect my teeth? Children created hypotheses about what would happen to eggs left in Coke, grape juice and water.

On the following day, we made observations, recorded our results and developed some conclusions. Best quote of the week: "I can't believe we're being REAL scientists!" They absolutely loved every minute of this. Ask your child what they learned about maintaining healthy teeth! Thank you May!

"I learned, don't drink coke or juice or it will make your teeth rotten. Even if you brush your teeth, it won't make them as white as you want them to be. Water keeps them clean and healthy."

To apply what we have been learning about problem solving over the past few weeks, students created their own math stories to share with one another. They had fun coming up with these stories and having their friends try and solve them. Help your child to see that math and numbers are all around us. Try making up some number stories wherever you go!

"One day 3 birds sat on a tree and 1 bird fell on a branch. How many are there?"

"There are 3 race cars and 10 more came. How many are there now?"

Your little ones worked very hard on their special gifts for mom. They put so much love and attention into their watercolour paintings and spent a great deal of time writing out their messages of love inside. I hope every one of you moms feels valued, appreciated, loved and adored this weekend. We appreciate you!

Classroom Reminders:

1. Next Friday, May 18 is a Professional Day for teachers. There will be no school for morning or afternoon students.
