Welcome to our last few weeks of kindergarten! I’m so proud of the work you’re continuing to send me each week and can hardly contain my excitement about the incredible reading skills you have developed over the past few months. Like curious little caterpillars on a journey of becoming butterflies, you are kindergarteners evolving into confident grade one students! How cool is that?! Look at these gorgeous butterflies you created...
I spy a ... BUTTERFLY!

TUESDAY
My wonderful letter detectives, this week you are going to be searching for a new letter combination...ING! As always, I’ve found a fun little video to get you started with some ideas:
Before you start drawing things that include the ING sound, I would like to show you a little trick around how artists draw people who are moving or engaged in fun actions. To start, look at this picture. Notice that this person has a body, a head, arms, legs, hands and feet, but no details yet. Can you move your body into this position:
Now try moving your body into these positions:
Great! Now you're going to try drawing some people who are doing different movements. What actions can you think of? It may be helpful to think of things you do for exercise. Remember, just start with a head, body, arms, legs, hands and feet. We'll add the details later. I like to draw the head and body first and then think about what the arms and legs would be doing. It might be helpful to make the action yourself before starting to draw. Or have an assistant do the action for you so you can see what their arms and legs are doing :)
Do you notice the movement lines? They show when something is moving fast in a particular direction.
Next is the fun part...you're going to add details and words to your drawings. Remember your new letter combo (ING). As always, please allow your child to phonetically sound out their words, just making sure that the ING sound is spelled correctly.
And lastly, add some colour!
WEDNESDAY
Here are your new sight words for the week:
BE YOUR HIS HER
Have any old magazines or flyers hanging around? Try searching for our popcorn words! You can also search for small words hidden inside of bigger words. I cut these out of the first 3 pages of the latest Avenue magazine.
I love that some of you tried Word Smash! Love the Scrabble idea too! Genius!
Ok, now on to your activity for today. Start by watching the following story. It highlights how each of us is different, but also very much the same.
After watching the story, have a discussion with your child about how the things that make us different are actually the things that make us special. Our differences are something to be CELEBRATED!
Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between you and another member of your family, or a friend. Talk about the things you have in common and the things that are unique to each of you.
THURSDAY
I am SOOO excited about your challenge for today. I wish I could be in your homes with you to help make this happen. A HUGE part of being in kindergarten is using our imaginations to CREATE, MAKE and PLAY.
I love cardboard. Everyone at school knows to bring their extra boxes to me. My favourite thing to do when I find a great new box is to put it in the middle of the carpet and ask the kiddos what we should do with it. Ideas IMMEDIATELY start swirling and the most difficult part becomes finding an idea we can ALL agree on. The following photos capture one of my many favourite box adventures from last year. These kiddos decided they wanted to turn our box to be a pirate ship. I asked, "What will you need to turn this into a pirate ship?" Over the course of the next few days, they kept coming back to this box, adding details, treasures, making swords and maps. They were leaders of their own play. All I did was ask the initial question.
Today, you’re going to be a maker, a designer, a BOXITECT! Find a box. Any box. It can be big or it can be small. Use your incredible imagination to turn your box into something new. I found 2 great stories about building with boxes that I would like to share with you. The first is read by our very own MAYOR, Naheed Nenshi!
This doesn’t have to be fancy. A box, some markers, some tape, and some scrap paper is enough to get you started. Let your child guide this activity. Let their imagination go wild! Here are some fun paper sculpture ideas that may be a fun way to decorate your box.
FRIDAY
PASSION PROJECT DAY!
From bloodhounds to the origins of hot chocolate, our kiddos are diving into topics that are interesting to THEM! I love it!!
