We had a wonderful week together in kindergarten! Our letter focus was D and we had fun exploring DINOSAURS, a fossil DIG and some very fun DRIP art during centre time.

Adaptation! Adaptation! What a tricky word to remember but such an interesting topic. We learned about the four main ways animals adapt to their environment in the winter. Students played a “ Who am I?” game to learn some facts about the animals that adapt. In our journal, we drew pictures of 3 different animals and shared facts about how they adapt in the winter. Ask your child what animals they drew and how they stay warm in the winter.

We read a beautiful story called, Tiny Perfect Things and brainstormed what things we could think of that fit that description. The children came up with everything from a strawberry to a ladybug. We then went outside with iPads in hand, searching for tiny perfect things to take pictures of. THEY LOVED THIS!! There were so many giggles and smiles.

We focused on area this week in math. We played a game on the smartboard to compare the size of two objects. We practiced using the terms “ bigger than” or “smaller than” when looking at two different shapes. We then estimated how many classroom items we could fit into a mitten outline. Students placed items into the mitten to see how much flat surface each item covered. We were then able to compare the item's sizes and learn that bigger items take up more room than smaller items!

We also practiced arranging things in order of their length and found that this was surprisingly tricky for some of our learners. Try finding 10 random items at home and see if your child can arrange them from shortest to longest.

Here's a sneak peek into our centre time magic this week...
