It's official...we're obsessed with dinosaurs! In all my years as a kindergarten teacher (14 to be exact), I have never had a group of students more excited about dinosaurs than this one. It's so incredibly special to be a part of their enthusiasm and excitement each day. When you find a topic that captures a child's heart and attention...go with it! They've never been more motivated to read, write, investigate, explore and create!
As we begin to explore a wider variety of books, websites and videos, we're learning to categorize information that we find as either FACT and FICTION. Our kiddos drew pictures about a fact that they had learned and recorded a sentence about what they had drawn. This was the first time many of them attempted a full sentence and they TOTALLY ROCKED IT! *Proud teacher moment!* Throughout the weekend, have your child classify books, shows and any silly things that you can come up with, as fact or fiction. We had a lot of fun with this all week.
We dove into the world of paleontology this week with some rock and fossil investigations. The excitement at this centre as they made new discoveries was absolutely magical.
We learned that the human skeleton has many similarities to a dinosaur skeleton. We examined pictures of both and learned the words skull, ribcage, hip and spine. Ask your child to identify where these bones are on their body! Children were challenged to be a paleontologist for the day and worked very hard to put some dinosaur bones bones back together.
We also had fun creating our own dinosaur skeletons and doing some observational drawing and painting...
We learned about the letter J this week. Many little ones mix up the sound for J and G and may need a bit of extra practice to understand the difference between these two letters :)
In math this week, we created T-charts to compare the weight of two items before deciding which was lightest and heaviest. We continued to explore balance scales and moved into exploring other tools that can measure the weight of various objects.
Have a spectacular weekend everyone! Can't wait to continue the fun next week! Mrs. Planden will be in on Monday. I'll see you all on Tuesday :)
