We discovered so many amazing things that begin with the letter W this week! Whales, wolves and wire made their way into our play.
Winston the Book Wolf is one of my favourite stories and always inspires some incredible conversations about juicy, delicious words and the joy of reading. The illustrations and connection to traditional fairy tales make it so fun to read with a group of kiddos. We were inspired by Winston's story and decided to create our own representations of this great character.
We explored a new music centre where children experimented with sound.
Over the past couple of weeks, every child in the school has been asked to answer this question, "What are the wonderful things you want to say about Briar Hill School?" This question came to us from Mr. Hart in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of who we are as a school community. What makes Briar Hill different from other schools? Why do we love coming here every day? It became abundantly clear when reviewing the children's responses that our kindergarteners love coming to school to spend time with their teachers, make friends, explore new centres and go outside. Thank you to those of you learning from home this week who have sent me your child's responses.
Here's what the kiddos have been up to with Mrs. Planden...
As we look at wrapping up our measurement unit, we looked closely at the different tools that can be used for measuring. We discussed scales, rulers and thermometers and explored what and how thermometers measure. Our students were fascinated as they began with the thermometer at room temperature, and the effect of moving outside into a colder environment on the red line. Students then placed the thermometers into the snow to see the resulting change, and then were challenged to see if they could think of a way to make the red line travel up. By the end of our explorations, students understood that when the red line moved up it showed that what we were measuring was getting warmer, and when the red line moved down, things were getting colder. A few math centers that the students engaged in this week were sifting through magazines to find "found" numbers, breaking numbers out of ice and forming numbers using wire.
We also have a new baby wellness centre where the children have been learning some real-world uses for measurement.
I'll leave you with some photos from our centre time this week and a few pictures sent to us from our at-home learners!
Enjoy the sunshine this weekend! Spring is right around the corner!

P.S. If you have any cardboard at home, we would love to have it! It would be incredibly helpful if you could cut it into small pieces in a variety of square or rectangular shapes. We are gathering supplies for a building centre over the next couple of weeks and your help would be so greatly appreciated! Thank you!
