 This week in kindergarten...

We explored the letter N and practiced drawing and writing things that begin with this letter. So many kiddos are becoming more confident sounding out entire words and this is so wonderful to see!

We are learning the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. We played a fun game called "Fact or Fiction," where I would tell the kiddos something and they had to determine whether it was fact or fiction. Try this at home! They loved it. We read many books about winter and reflected on our favourite activities to do during this season. We also watched some videos to help us understand WHY we experience different seasons.

Due to overwhelming interest, we decided to investigate narwhals this week. We learned so many interesting facts! Try asking your child the following questions:

Where do narwhals live?
(in very cold water in the arctic)

Do all narwhals have tusks?
(All male narwhals have a tusk, though some have 2! Most females do not have a tusk)

What is a narwhals tusk?
(It is a tooth!)

What do narwhals use their tusks for?
(sensing their environment, communicating with one another, and hitting fish, making them easier to eat)

What does a narwhal eat?
(shrimp, squid and fish)

What animals eat narwhals?
(polar bears and orcas)

We continue to practice blending and segmenting words into their parts every single day. I recently discovered an amazing website that has games to practice these skills. We've been playing the games together in class. It works particularly well on an iPad or tablet, but also works on a computer. Definitely check this out! (https://phonicsandstuff.com/games)

On Friday, the PM class met with their grade 3/4 buddies for some incredible snowman art.

I'm short on time this week, so the photos aren't beautifully sorted like usual. Have your child tell you about what's happening in the pictures below :)

P.S. During our last Parent Teacher Conferences, I talked to many of you about a recent book I read. I wanted to share the title and author with you because I have found it to be such an incredible read. It is called, Good Inside, and it is written by Dr. Becky Kennedy. This book has made me a better teacher and parent. Highly recommend!
