This week in kindergarten...

We practiced drawing squares and learned to add details to magically transform our shapes into recognizable pictures.

We drew our first self-portraits! We spent time looking into mirrors and talking about what we see. We read stories about being unique and talked about the fact that our differences are what make us special.

We used scissors for the first time! This was a little bit tricky for some, but most of them totally rocked it!

We spent a lot of time this week talking about our names. We talked about how many letters we have in our name, what letters our name start and end with, words that rhyme with our names and the MEANING of our names. Some children had wonderful stories about the origin of their name. I would encourage you to talk with your child about their name. Ask them if they know their middle and last name and share with them how you choose their name. We honoured our names with a special art project.

In math on Monday, children spent time talking about the number 1 with our first substitute teacher, Miss Matthews (Mrs. Planden was sick on that day). They practiced writing the number 1 on each other's hands and searched for numbers in magazines.

Here are some photos from our centre time fun this week. Children had a lot of fun creating representations of their homes with magnatiles.

Classroom Information and Reminders

1. Our first set of parent teacher conferences will take place on Thursday evening and Friday morning next week. This first meeting is an opportunity for you to tell us about your child. What works well for them? What are your hopes for this year? Booking takes place online. If you are having any difficulty with the online booking, please contact Katie in the main office and she can assist you. There will be no school for AM or PM kindergarten next Friday.

2. If your child goes to before / after school care, we request that you send in a separate kindergarten snack for them in their backpack that is not a part of their lunch. Sometimes kiddos in the afternoon class have already eaten their entire lunch when they come to kindergarten and have nothing left for snack.

Have a wonderful weekend!
