This week was short and sweet! We focused on the letter A, reviewed all of the letters we've learned so far, did some sorting with Mrs. Planden and explored some new classroom centres.
If you haven't already done so, please take a look at the letter review your child brought home with them on Thursday. This will give you a really good idea how well your child is understanding the literacy concepts we have been focusing on in class. The photo below shows a progression of how writing evolves from labelling with beginning letter sounds, to labelling with beginning and ending sounds (or sometimes beginning and middle sounds), and finally, recording words with beginning, middle and ending sounds. At this point in the year, I am looking to see that children can label with a single beginning letter and would only expect them to know the letters we have spent time focusing on. Anything beyond that is a bonus! Please reach out if you have any questions.
Take a look at our centre time fun from this week...
(He only likes things that begin with the letter A.)
In math this week we started our new Sorting (grouping like objects together into sets) unit! Mrs. Planden made a BIIIIIIIG mess using some of the items we had in our classroom, and we used our sorting skills to organize it! Organizing and cleaning-up is a wonderful and practical way to develop sorting skills--which is an important foundational skill towards more complicated math. A great application of these concepts is to clean up a playroom at home, or to organize books on a shelf by colour of the spine! This weekend, please ask your child to empty the cutlery from the dishwasher into the drawer--another great hands-on way to support your child at home on this concept! The students are so excited to explore the many ways to group objects over the coming weeks!
Classroom Info and Reminders
1. With Halloween taking place on a Sunday this year, children are invited to wear their costumes at school on Friday, October 29th. As this is a Friday when the afternoon class attends, the morning class is invited to wear their costumes to school on the morning of Thursday, October 28th. This is by no means required, but welcomed if your child would like to show off their costume. We ask that weapon accessories stay at home. Please do not send in any food treats for your child to hand out as we are not able to share food in class at this time.
2. Photo retake day will be happening on Thursday, November 4th. If you missed the original picture day OR would like to have your child's photo taken again, please email me to let me know so I can ensure they don't get missed on that day.
See you on Tuesday! Mrs. Planden will be in on Monday. Have a spooktacular weekend 😉👻
