 This week in kindergarten...

We focused on the letter M, made mice out of playdough, painted mountains, and learned about one of Miss Roberts' favourite artists, Piet Mondrian.

We learned what it means to be mindful. We are developing an awareness of the things we think about, and have begun learning different strategies to help us manage our thoughts when they become too much.

We painted poppies in honour of Remembrance Day and learned many new vocabulary words through a classroom word hunt.

Here's what the kiddos were up to with Mrs. Planden on Monday:

Our pattern explorations are fully under way and you can expect that if your child hasn't yet, they will definitely be alerting you to every pattern they encounter!! Our week began with pattern blocks --first we did a free exploration of the material where the kids were given full creative freedom to use the blocks in whatever way they wished. From there, they were given a challenge to create a pattern using the material. Lots of valuable conversations were had about what was a pattern and what wasn't a pattern. Some friends created simple basic AB patterns, while others were a bit more complex!  After creating a variety of patterns we then switched gears and the kids were challenged to sort the materials! We want to connect math concepts together as much as possible to help create math learners who are able to think flexibly about math concepts and can find the connections between topics.

Then for our group lesson, we went on a hunt around the school for patterns. One particular 'pattern hot spot' was Mrs. Gerla's classroom and we found a goldmine of amazing patterns. We got to explore and work in her classroom while her students were on a field trip and took our time to represent the patterns we saw into our math notes! Then we came back to our classroom and found some more patterns from our classroom.

Patterning is always such a fun topic for the kids to explore and we would love to encourage you and your child to use some objects that you have at home to explore pattern creation!
