We had a GGGGreat week learning about the letter G and all things GREEN!
One of this week’s highlights was completing an art+science experiment that involved colour mixing. Children were challenged to create as many different shades of green as possible using only yellow, blue, and white.
The letter G is a tricky one that many children confuse for J. Ask your child what our action and sound is for the letter G!
With Miss Matthews this week, we continued to explore what makes us unique. We read the story ‘Be You’ by Peter Reynolds and then brainstormed ideas about how we are unique. Students then helped their friends trace their hands and added drawings of things that make them unique!
In math with Mrs. Planden and Miss Matthews, kiddos began a mini unit taking a look at the concept of time. We discovered that students knew A LOT about time already! They explained that time was different depending on where you were in the world, that 3:30 in the morning felt very different than 3:30 in the afternoon, and that time was based around the patterns of the sun. They even knew that the largest number (and the number at the very top) was 12 and lots of students told us about the time change this past weekend and how they had seen their parents changing the time on their ovens and microwaves. We read a super fun story called 'Fix the Clock' which in addition to the theme of time, had a section we explored about all the friends of 7 (all the different combinations of numbers that add up to 7) and we represented them with wooden pieces to extend what we learned from the book.
We then did a super exciting science experiment where we added water to a white powder (artificial snow, or polyacrylate) and watched as it expanded and 'puffed up'. We then used time words to describe the procedure and charted our observations next to the words 'first, then and after'. We even got to play with the substance we created in our centre time! Finally, we read an amazing book about time called "A Second is a Hiccup" and began learning about ordinal numbers -- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. -- which are different than counting numbers because they describe time and position.
Here’s a look at some of our centre time fun from this week…
Have a wonderful weekend!
