We had a great week together in kindergarten! With mirrors, practice sketches, and plasticine, we investigated the details of our faces.
When they felt ready, children drew some pretty spectacular self portraits. The following day, we started painting them and worked really hard to use realistic colours to represent ourselves. We can’t wait to share the finished product with you at our parent teacher conferences next week! If you are having any difficulties booking a time online, please contact the office for assistance.
We focused on the letter U this week. We practiced drawing things that begin with this letter sound and worked hard to sound out the word for each.
We also did some “sticker spelling” this week. We are becoming confident writers! At this point in time, children are asked to s-t-r-e-t-c-h out each word and record all of the sounds that they hear. If you see your child writing this way, please don't correct them. This is called phonetic spelling and it is exactly where kindergarteners are supposed to be!
In math with Mrs. Planden, we practiced the skill of subitizing (recognizing a number of objects without having to count them). We played a game called ‘Splat’. A number of dots would appear on the screen and students had to figure out how many there were. Then a splat would come across the screen and hide some of the dots. Students then had to figure out how many dots were hiding underneath the splat shape. Try practicing this game at home using different materials found around the house!
Miss Matthews taught us that Canada has two official languages. We discovered that lots of our friends could speak more than one language and not everyone speaks English at home. We learned how to count to five in French and played a variety of games to help us practice this exciting new skill. Ask your child if they can count to five in French for you!
Just a friendly reminder that kindergarten students do not have school on Thursday or Friday of next week, due to our parent teacher interviews. We look forward to chatting with you!
Have a wonderful weekend!
