Our week was short and sweet and SO much fun!

We focused on the letter A and dove into the wonderful world of abstract art! They absolutely LOVED this.

A mystery box appeared in our classroom this week. Clues were left around the box and after some investigation, the children wrote down guesses about what they might find inside. Today, the mystery creature inside the box was revealed...ask your child what it was!

Check out this amazing spelling...

 bat

skeleton, rock, worms, pumpkin

Our finger muscles were hard at work creating some kooky pumpkins. We used finger painting and our expert scissor skills to create these beauties.

We also made some pretty cool magic potions!

We watched ArtHub videos on YouTube to help us draw some spooky Halloween characters.

Classroom Information and Reminders

1. Tomorrow is a Professional Day for teachers. There is no school for morning or afternoon students.

2. Briar Hill School will again be a collection point for winter coats, snow pants, mittens and hats for kids and families across the city. There will be a collection bin in the foyer by the main entrance from October 28 to November 15. Please bring in gently used items of all sizes. Let's help make it an easier winter for families in need.

3. We're going on our first field trip! Over the next couple of weeks, both classes will have the opportunity to visit our local fire station. We need approximately 5 parents from each class to join us for this exciting day. If you already have your approved security clearance and would be interested in joining us, please let me know ASAP (taroberts@cbe.ab.ca).

The MORNING class will be going to the fire station on Thursday, November 14. Volunteers will be needed from 9:20 am - 11:30 am. More details will be sent home next week.

The AFTERNOON class will be going to the fire station on Wednesday, November 6. Volunteers will be needed from 1:20 pm to 3:30 pm. Please review the letter sent home in your child's folder for details.

Happy Halloween!

Our community investigation this week turned to towers! With T as our letter focus, we had so much fun exploring how to plan, build and create Tall Towers. Each child shared their favourite towers from around the world. These ranged from the Eiffel Tower and Leaning Tower of Pisa to the Bow tower and the Shell building (because a certain very special mom works there 😉). They were seriously excited to see and explore pictures of the buildings they recognized. Children created their own towers using a very fun (and very messy) new printmaking technique.

Printmaking took an awesome and unexpected turn during centre time...

On the following day, we became architects and created Tower Building Design Plans. We experimented with different design ideas and discovered that tall buildings need a strong, stable base. Our kiddos were SO proud to bring their design ideas to life.

Have you heard...?!? Starbucks has a new location at Briar Hill School! We've been serving up pumpkin spice lattes and mint chocolate chip coffees all week. These kids are measuring, sorting by size, engaging in polite and thoughtful conversations, counting and writing for real-world purposes, AND having a ton of fun along the way. This was a hit!

 "Starbucks"

We played basketball during our gym times this week. We've got some seriously talented kids!

Our mantra this week:
I AM PERSISTENT!

Classroom Information and Reminders

Just a friendly reminder that we go to the library every week. Morning students go to the library on Wednesdays and afternoon students go to the library on Thursdays. Children are welcome to return their library book on or before their library day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Miss Roberts :)
