We have been deeply engaged in some exciting science and art endeavors over the past couple of weeks! Our classroom cricket friends have inspired a great deal of interest in insects and we spent a lot of time this week investigating insects in our very own backyard.

Students have been exploring many different kinds of science, reflecting on what kind of scientist they would like to be and enjoying some exciting new classroom centers. Our resident science expert, Mr. Hart, has been teaching us about how scientists use microscopes to look closely and investigate living things. We even had a very special science surprise left for us in our classroom on Friday by a very sneaky and thoughtful kindness ninja! Afternoon students will learn about this exciting new addition to our classroom on Monday.

Children have been applying their number expertise to problem solving activities over the past couple of weeks. This was our latest number challenge:

Miss Roberts has collected 7 insects. Some of them are ladybugs and some of them are bumblebees. How many of each insect does Miss Roberts have?

Our work with artist, Sharon Fortowski, has come to a close and we are so very proud of the incredible self-portraits we have created with her. They're almost complete! Stay tuned for info on when we will be sharing our amazing artwork with you.

Classroom Reminders:

Wednesday, May 2 is Hats On for Mental Health Day! Students are encouraged to wear a hat to show their support.  We are asking that anyone who participates donate $2. The money raised will go to the Canadian Mental Health Association.

I hope you're outside enjoying the sunshine! Have a beautiful weekend :)

We welcomed our Artist in Residence, Sharon Fortowsky, to the school this week. With Mrs. F, Children had the opportunity to explore an exciting new material...CLAY! We learned some clay building basics and are working on creating self-portraits. Our hard work this week is now off to be fired and we will be painting and adding exciting details like hair and clothing to our portraits in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Students loved exploring this new medium during center time too...

We learned a new math game this week that is helping students learn the skill of counting-on when adding 2 groups of numbers together. This is a brand-new skill for many of our little ones. When rolling 2 dice, have your child touch one of them, say the number, and then count-on from that number to find the total (6...7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12). Give it a try at home this weekend!

Children did some writing to accompany their magnificent self-portrait paintings from last week, exploring what makes each of us unique and amazing. We used "space men" to help us remember to use spaces between words when we write and worked hard to have our letters sitting on the lines rather than floating above them. Their writing this week was out of this world!

On our early dismissal Friday, afternoon students learned some new tricks around how to draw people in action while brainstorming different ways to exercise and keep our bodies healthy!

Have you heard about the new addition to our room? We received a surprise from our friends in Mr. West's class this week! When we're extra quiet during our work times, we can now hear crickets chirping in the background. It's SO cool!

Classroom Reminders:

1. In case you missed last week's post, this is a reminder that we are now only switching home reading books on Mondays and Thursdays

2. Next Friday, April 20 is a Professional Day for teachers. There will be no school for morning OR afternoon students on this day.

Enjoy some SUNSHINE this weekend!!

It feels great to be back with your little ones again! Although we had a very short week together, the past few days have been filled with beautiful, artistic exploration. This week was all about the letter V, so we focused our learning on my VERY favourite artist, Vincent van Gogh. Students were inspired to create their very own Starry Night paintings and self-portraits during center time this week. We enjoyed learning a little bit about his life and were shocked to learn how few paintings he sold in his lifetime. In case you were curious, Starry Night could NOW be yours for the bargain price of 100 million dollars!

Children learned to create their own surveys and collect data from their classmates. They had SO much fun with this. There were so many skills integrated into this activity. Reading and writing each other's names, organizing information, talking to each other, and evaluating the data once their surveys were complete. Ask your child what their survey question was :)

We enjoyed drawing and sharing stories with each other about our exciting spring break adventures!

Classroom Reminders

1. Beginning next week, we will only be switching home reading books on Mondays and Thursdays. This is to encourage students to read their books over multiple days (building fluency, expression and sight-word vocabulary) and will help to streamline the process of sharing and switching books at school.

2. If you are interested in ordering any Scholastic books this month, orders are due back on Monday.
