Each week in kindergarten, we will highlight one special letter to help us practice letter formation and become more confident with letter/sound relationships. This week we learned about the letter P. Children practiced printing this letter in their fancy artist sketchbooks and drew pictures of things that begin with this sound. Please support your child by pointing out anything and everything you see or hear that begins with this letter. When you're driving in the car, walking through the grocery store, or looking at what's being served for dinner, see if your child can find things beginning with the P letter sound.

"Miss Roberts, there's P-P-PEARS in my snack!"

We were even inspired to make things that begin with the letter P using our play dough!

Ask your child who these 2 cuties are...
(This is Papa Pig and Peppa Pig. They ONLY like things that begin with the letter P.)

We used our knowledge of building pictures with shapes to help us practice and refine our scissor skills this week. For some, this was easy peasy and for others, this was a challenge! Invite your child cut out a circle this weekend and see how they do :)

We honoured Orange Shirt Day by having many meaningful discussions, watching videos and creating a collaborative work of art that will continue on next week. Children learned a bit about the history of residential schools and why Phyllis Webstad had her favourite orange shirt taken from her. We drew pictures of OUR favourite outfits and reflected on what it would feel like to have these outfits taken from us.

And as always, here are a few pictures that capture some of our centre time fun from this week... we integrated a whole lot of P words into our P-P-PLAY! Keep a lookout for pandas, pigs, pets and pearls!

Here's a note from Mrs. Planden about what the kiddos were up to in math this week:

Since our last blog update we have been studying the numbers 2 and 3 in math. Thank you so much to everyone for continuing to bring in the items for the number of the week. Kids have been so jazzed to share their items and have made some awesome connections during this time. We are also loving the way that we are learning about each other and our friends' families with this activity. For the number 3 we had a strawberry plant with three leaves, a megablock with 3 bumps, photo of a family of 3, a photo of a 3 year old brother, a picture of the three sisters, the three of hearts and 3 dollars -- a toonie and a loonie and many other wonderful representations of the number 3! Here is a picture of the items that the morning class brought in and a few other photos that show our investigations into the number 3!

One observation that was made when we were determining whether the number 3 was a 'fair share' number (this is a little early exploration of the even/odd concept) we had determined that 3 was NOT a 'fair share' number. Then a student in the morning class and the afternoon class both made the observation, "But wait... we can fair share the number 3 with 3 people! One each!" These are powerful discoveries for the kids to make and really demonstrate the deep thinking that occurs in kindergarten!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
