We had another beautiful week full of wonder and discovery! Our question of the day on Tuesday asked students to identify this “mystery fruit” and provoked a great deal of excitement and curiosity…

“It’s a lemon. Definitely a lemon. Look at the colour.”

“It smells like an orange to me.”

“I think it smells sour.”

“I think it might be a grapefruit.”

"What on earth is a grapefruit?"

“Grapefruits are purple and long and look like a chubby banana.”

This began a beautiful discussion about our senses. We talked about which of our senses would be most helpful in identifying the mystery fruit. Our sense of sight, touch and smell could only get us so far…we needed to TASTE the mystery fruit to be sure. Interestingly, very few students had ever heard of a grapefruit, let alone try one. They weren’t overly impressed with the taste! Hahaha. The afternoon class insisted on tasting a lemon to compare. This was so much fun.

To build upon our senses conversation, we spent time this week identifying each of our 5 senses and had many great discussions about which of our senses is most important. We used our expert observational drawing skills to sketch the body part associated with each sense.

The following day, children wrote about their favourite things to see, taste, touch, smell and hear.

Now experts at drawing eyes, ears, mouths and noses, this seemed like the perfect week for us to explore the amazing artwork of Pablo Picasso! On our early dismissal Friday, our incredible little artists worked very hard to create some abstract self-portraits. I am so in love with these!

We celebrated Love of Reading Week on Friday by dressing like our favourite storybook characters. Our classroom flower shop was run by Darth Vader and his Stormtrooper sidekick :) Big thanks go out to the guest storytellers who joined us this week!

I hope you're all out enjoying the sunshine today! See you on Tuesday!
